Summary of Events
The Assad regime continued its brutal crackdown on its opposition killing more than 160 people today, including 25 children that died due to the indiscriminate aerial raids, rocket and artillery shelling throughout the country as activists reported the death of six rebel fighters after inhaling unidentified poisonous gas deployed by regime forces in the city of Homs.
The Homs suburb of Talbiseh has seen its second mass murder in the 21-month uprising with regime fighter jet bombardin a bakery as hungry civilians were waiting in line for bread, therefore, leaving more than 15 of them dead and dozens more wounded.
At least 60 people were killed in Damascus and its suburbs, ten of whom did due to the fierce shelling in the provincial town of Daraya. Meanwhile, 28 people died in Aleppo, most of whom died due to the indiscriminate shelling in the neighbourhoods of Karm Maysar and Bustan Qaser as well as in the provincial town of Jabrin. Some seven people died in Hama, four of whom were killed in an airstrike that targeted a residential building in the provincial town Morek, the victim were IDPs who fled the violence from their town of Yabroud in rural Damascus. Dozens of people were killed due to the violent shelling and clashes that took place in Idlib, Raqa, Deir Azzour, Daraa and Qunaitera.
Regime forces shelled as many as 263 different areas across the country using all sort of heavy weaponry including cluster and phosphorous bombs as well as barrel bombs. Some 105 areas were shelled by mortar shells and 79 others were pounded by heavy artillery.
More than 31 areas came under rocket shelling as fighter jets launched more than 20 airstrikes mainly on the suburbs of Hama and Damascus as well as on the cities of Aleppo, Deir Azzour and Homs. Helicopter gunships dropped more than 31 barrel bombs, 20 of which targeted the district of Masyaf Salma in the suburb of Latakia. These attacks caused extensive damage to residential buildings and left dozens of people dead and wounded and sent thousands fleeing their homes.
The rebels made new gains across the country as they announced the liberation of the ancient castle of Harem which lies in the northeastern suburbs of Idlib after more than 70 days of continuous fighting that left at least 147 rebel fighters dead. The rebels continued to clamp down on the airbases of Menneg and Qowayres in the suburbs of Aleppo. They also seized control of a gas factory north of Raqa city and shot down a fighter jet as they stormed the Alawite village of Ma’an in the suburb of Hama, home for Assad staunch loyalists.
The rebels said they killed Nidal Alyan, a senior commander in the Palestinian “Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine– General Command” during clashes in the neighbourhood of Tadamon, south of Damascus.
Mass and high-profile defections from the Assad regime took place today with Major Gen. Abudl-Aziz Shallal, head of military police in Syria announcing his defection to the rebels’ side. General Ali Khaled Ali, administrative chief at the department of military records also defected while activists said that deputy chief of investigation in the Syrian General Intelligence fled to Jordan and shall announce his defection within the next 48 hours. Some 70 soldiers have also defected to the rebels’ side from their base in the army’s 18th division in Homs.
