Summary of Events
More than 144 people, including 17 children, ten women and 44 rebel fighters were killed by regime forces on the last day of the bloody year 2012 where more than 46,240 people died, including civilians, rebel fighters and regime forces.
At least 67 people died in Damascus and its suburbs today, including 16 rebel fighters that were killed during clashes with regime forces in the town of Moadamiyat al-Sham. Meanwhile, three school students were killed under torture after been kidnapped in the neighbourhood of Jobar few days ago. Dozens of civilians were also killed and many more were wounded as regime forces continued their indiscriminate shelling in the provincial towns of Daraya, Douma, Qarrah, Zabadani, Mesraba and Sbeneh.
More than 14 people died Aleppo city when a regime helicopter gunship dropped a number of barrel bombs on a residential compound in the neighbourhood of Marjeh. Meanwhile, the rebels discovered five bodies when they stormed the oil well of Habari in the Raqa suburb of Tabaqa in the north of the country.
Regime forces shelled as many as 312 different locations across the country using all sort of heavy weaponry, including cluster, phosphorous, thermobaric and TNT bombs. Some 124 locations were shelled by mortar shells and 124 others were pounded by heavy artillery. More than 45 locations came under rocket shelling as fighter jets struck more than 21 others. These attacks caused extensive damage to residential buildings and left dozens of people dead and wounded and sent thousands fleeing their homes.
The rebels shot down a fighter jet in the East Ghouta district of Damascus province in addition to a helicopter gunship in the suburb of Idlib. They bombed a helicopter gunship as they pushed into the Menneg airbase while continued to besiege the airbases of Jarrah and Quwayres in Aleppo itself.
Heavy fighting erupted in Damascus and its suburbs as the rebels thwarted an attempt by regime forces to enter the Palestinian Yarmouk camp as well as the provincial towns of Daraya, Moadamiyat al-Sham, Zabadani, Sayeda Zeinab, Irbin and other towns near the road to Damascus airport. The rebels destroyed at least eight military tanks and a number of armoured vehicles, in addition to killing and wounding dozens of regime soldiers during these clashes.
Fighting also continued on several fronts in Idlib, Daraa, Deir Azzour, Hama and Raqa. The rebels continued their offensive on the Deir Azzour airbase in the east and stormed the Habari oil well in the Raqa suburb of Tabaqa in the north. Fighting left dozens of regime soldiers and rebel fighters dead.
Syria’s formal inflation rate increased by 48% on an annual basis in September, according to the government’s statistical agency. Prices skyrocketed in Syria in recent months over plummeting production and supplies, higher import tariffs and a decline in the value of the Syrian pound.
