SRINAGAR: A video-clip showing Kashmir police personnel severely thrashing two youth before stripping them naked has gone viral on social networking sites since Tuesday evening.
The two-minute video-clip titled “Kashmir: Indian militiamen assault detained Kashmiri teenagers,” has been uploaded on popular video sharing website YouTube. Apparently shot with a cell phone camera, the grainy video shows dozens of men in uniform, in presence of their senior officials, surround an unidentified youth at what appears to be the compound of a police station.
As the video starts rolling, a police official starts whipping the youth, apparently with a waist belt. The thrashing of the youth continues until the video ends. In between, scores of police officials hurl choicest abuses at the youth while dragging him and raining batons on him. The youth is seen howling in pain, and pleading with police officials to stop while repeatedly saying: “I am not the one.”
As the flogging continues, another youth is hustled in. The second youth is immediately pounced upon by scores of policemen who first drag him around and then strip him. The stripping is followed by thrashing with batons, canes, and kicks. The video ends with a scene of chaos in the police compound.
The video has already generated more than a thousand hits on YouTube since it first surfaced on Tuesday evening on Facebook. Although it’s unclear where and when the video was shot and who the youth in it are, the description of the video on the YouTube says it “has been shot in Baramulla police station in 2010.”
“In this video, mercenary JKP militiamen are seen brutally assaulting two Muslim Kashmiri boys and forcing them to strip in an attempt to break their resolve to protest,” the video info reads. “This is the latest of a series of video evidences which shows how Indian occupational forces commit war crimes in Kashmir.”
The video up-loader also claims to have uploaded a 2011 video clip, showing an injured and trapped militant being shot dead by army soldiers from point-blank range. The video became instantly viral on social networking sites amid mass outrage.
Earlier, in September 2010, a three minute video-clip purportedly showing some young Kashmiri boys being paraded naked by paramilitary CRPF personnel and police in Sopore town of North Kashmir triggered massive outrage against the forces. The clip titled ‘Indian Army repeating Abu Gharib in Kashmir’ showed several alleged stone-throwers being paraded naked.
Meanwhile, reacting to the latest video-clip which surfaced on prominent social networking sites Tuesday evening, scores of netizens expressed outrage and called the video a “gruesome evidence of police brutality.”
“This is absolute barbarism in Kashmir. Teenagers are being lynched by Indian Forces in Kashmir,” wrote a Facebook user. “Rogue cops of Omar Abdullah stamping peace on the butts of Kashmiris. Gruesome evidence of police atrocities straight from the lock-ups,” another Facebook user wrote.
Meanwhile, spokesman for Kashmir police Manoj Pandita told Kashmir Reader that police has launched an investigation into the matter and has registered an FIR at the Baramulla police station.
“We have filed an FIR (no 12/2013) under section 66A of the Information and Technology Act. We have stated an investigation first to verify the authenticity of the video and subsequently we will proceed further,” Pandita added.
