Summary of Events
Russia still supplies weapons to Syria based on legal contracts signed between the two countries long time ago, Syria’s Deputy Prime Minister, Qadri Jamil said to a Russian state-media today. Jamil said that Syria has always got weapons from Russia and still do and he confirmed that Syria will stop buying arms from Russia once the U.S. stops arming Israel.
Heavy clashes broke out on various fronts in the capital today as the rebels fired mortar and rocket shells into the Peoeple’s Palace and the Mazeh airbase. They also repelled the regime’s military offensive on the neighbourhoods of Barzeh and Tishrin in the north and attacked a number of military checkpoints in the Palestinian Yarmouk camp as well as in Dumar al-Balad near the p residential palace and another one near the State Security Branch in the neighbourhood of al-Joba in central Damascus.
The rebels stepped up their attacks on the military airports in the suburb of Aleppo. They seized control of the officers’ residential building near the Kuwayres airbase and killed seven troops inside the Jarah airbase in the Aleppo suburb of Masakana. They also shelled the Menneg airbase using heavy machine guns, artillery and locally-made missiles.
The rebels also stormed a traffic police station in the Raqa suburb of Tabaqa and clashed with the security forces near the municipality building in the same town. They also fired mortar shells into the Tabaq airbase as well.
They destroyed nine military tanks and a number of armoured vehicles during clashes that took place across the suburbs of Damascus, Daraa, Deir Azzour and Hama.
Regime forces continued their indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas across the country, using cluster, phosphorus, therbombaric and explosive bombs as well as the long-range surface-to-surface missiles, causing extensive material damage and leaving dozens of people dead and wounded.
The continued violence left more than 148 people dead today. Regime forces and loyalist militiamen killed at least 129 people, including 11 children, five women and 27 rebel fighters, whereas the rebels killed at least 20 soldiers and militiamen.
Regime airstrikes killed 20 people in the Aleppo suburb of Minbej and ten more in the suburb of al-Bab. Regime warplanes used dropped thermorabric bombs on residential areas in these two towns, turning many houses into rubble and leaving dozens more people wounded.
Regime forces executed and burnt 13 civilians near the town of Daraya today, while another aerial attack carried out by a fighter jet killed four people and injured many more in the town of Maida’aa of East Ghouta district near Damascus.
The joint Assad-Hezbollah forces killed 11 people in Homs. Rocket launchers and heavy artillery stationed at the Hezbollah-controlled Lebanese villages near the border with Syria, bombarded the town of Qusair, west of Homs. They also opened heavy fire on the Syrian villages of Burhaniya, Abu Hori and Sqarjeh where at least two people were killed. They also continued their intense rocket shelling on the neighbourhoods of Jobar and Sultaniya as well as the villages of Kafar’aya and Naqeera, leaving many people dead and wounded.
In Hama, at least seven people died and dozens more were injured due to the indiscriminate shelling in the town of Karnaz and the villages of Zakat and Hayalin.
Jordanian authorities said that more than 2695 Syrians crossed into Jordan yesterday only. According to Anmar Al Hamoud, government spokesperson for Syrian refugee affairs, said that more than 79,000 Syrians currently live in the Zaatari Refugee Camp near Mafraq, 80 kilometres north of Amman.
Amid growing insecurity in Syria’s Aleppo region, all parties to the conflict must respect patients, medical staff, and health facilities, the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said today. On January 24, a missile landed 800 meters from an MSF field hospital in the Aleppo area. No casualties were reported. On January 13, after an airstrike on a market in the nearby town of Azaz, 20 wounded people were treated at MSF’s hospital. MSF operates three field hospitals in the north and north-west of the country despite failing to obtain a permission from the Assad government.
