Residents of a small Saudi town were jolted out of their beds this week after hearing a man screaming through the mosque loudspeaker that he was the world’s saviour and that they must repent before it is too late.
Instead of going back to bed, most of them rushed out of their homes towards the mosque and captured the man before calling the police.
Police said they believe the man is suffering from mental problems after claiming that he was Al-Mahdi Al-Montathar (the chosen Al-Mahdi).
“He was screaming through the loudspeaker that he is the chosen Imam and telling the people to repent now,” Alsaudi newspaper said in a report from the eastern province of Ihsa.
“Residents said the man lives in the same town and has sometimes led prayers at the mosque while the local imam was absent.”
The arrest of the man was the latest in a series of incidents in Saudi Arabia involving men claiming to be the Mahdi
In late 2012, a man aged over 70 years finished prayers at packed mosque in Saudi Arabia and waited for the people to come out to claim to them that he was the chosen savior of the world. Minutes later, he was arrested.
The 73-year-old Saudi begged the worshippers in the Makkah to believe him that he was the Mahdi.
Earlier, Saudi police seized a man who was stopping people in the streets of Makkah and telling them that he was the long-awaited El-Mehdi Al-Montathar.
In 2011, Muslim faithful who had come to perform Asr Salaah at the Haram in Makkah were shocked when a man snatched the microphone and declared he was the Mahdi.
According to eyewitnesses, the imam has just started the prayer when the man grabbed the microphone and made his announcement. Security officers inside the mosque quickly arrested the man, who was said to be an Egyptian national in his 30s.
Security officers took the man to the police station at the mosque’s premises for investigation. Police deduced that the man was suffering from mental problems.
Mainstream Muslims believe that the Mahdi, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, will appear as a reformer before the Day of Judgement filling the earth with fairness and justice after it had been filled with injustice and oppression. According to the Hadith, he will rule the world for at least seven years.
